  • Lithonia Lighting Launches D-Series Size 1 LED Area Luminaire

Posted on February 4th, 2012 lina No comments

Acuity Brands, Inc. has expanded its LED outdoor lighting portfolio with the launch of the D-Series Size 1 LED Area Luminaire by Lithonia Lighting®.  The D-Series Size 1 luminaire offers a stylish, modern look ideal for manymercial and municipal applications, including parking lots, plazas, campuses and streetscapes. Its design makes a bold, progressive statement – in both aesthetics and technology – while still blending seamlessly with any outdoor environment.

When installed as a replacement for 100-400W metal halide luminaires, the D-Series Size 1 luminaire delivers an average of 65 percent energy savings and an expected service life of up to 100,000 hours or more.  The nighttime operation of approximately 20 years is equal to six or more expected metal halide re-lampings. If replacing metal halide one for one, each D-Series Size 1 luminaire is estimated to save owners thousands of dollars in energy and maintenance costs over its lifetime.

The luminaire’s proprietary optics deliver better uniformity and lower power density (watts per square foot) than metal halide, allowing site owners to save on energy while still meeting IESNA standards. The optical design also minimizes the number of costly poles needed for new construction applications.

“The D-Series Size 1 luminaire is a high-performer at a great value, making it the obvious choice for new construction and renovation projects, even whenpared to traditional products” said Emily Finn, Acuity Brands Lighting Value Stream Manager for outdoor lighting products. “We are truly excited to demonstrate its capabilities to themercial and municipal markets.”

The sleek modular design of the D-Series Size 1 luminaire also allows for easy maintenance and future light engine upgrades.  It is available with a wide range of options including dimming capabilities, install-friendly features and thepany’s ROAM® wireless monitoring and controlpatibility. It is finished with a zinc-infused powder coat paint that provides resistance to corrosion and weathering. The D-Series Size 1 luminaire also has zero uplight and qualifies as an Acuity Brands Nighttime Friendly™ product, making it consistent with the LEED® and Green Globes® criteria for eliminating wasteful uplight.

This luminaire is available nationally through Lithonia Lighting sales representatives and authorized distributors. For more information about LED lighting and controls, please visit Acuity Brands and Lithonia Lighting at acuitybrands and lithonia.

  • LED Lighting Company Elemental LED Partners with United States Green Building Council

Posted on January 28th, 2012 admin No comments

Elemental LED, A San Francisco Bay Area based LED lighting company, announced yesterday that it is now a partner in the United States Green Building Council’s Affinity Program. This program gives members of the USGBC Northern California chapter discounts at several green businesses throughout California.

Elemental LED launched the partnership with a special 1-month 25% discount to USGBC members. After the first month, Elemental LED will provide an ongoing discount of 20% off the company’s LED lighting products, as well as special deals to new members.

USGBC members include professionals from the fields of architecture, design, construction, engineering, government and real estate who are invested in building environmentally sustainable communities. Elemental LED will be gaining access to a large group of potential customers whose goals of decreasing energy use are similarly aligned. USGBC is in the process of improving benefits in an effort to attract new members.

“We are excited to be a partner in the USGBC Affinity Program. We hope to educate more green architects, contractors and building professionals on the energy and cost-saving benefits of installing LED lighting,” says Elemental LED Marketing Manager Charlotte Dick.

LED light bulbs, lamps and fixtures typically use 90% less energy than incandescent equivalents, and 50% less than fluorescent replacements. LEDs are typically rated to last 50,000 hours, which is 35 times longer than an incandescent equivalent, and 3 to 4 times as long as a fluorescent. Elemental LED products all hold RoHS certification, which guarantees that no environmentally harmful components were used in manufacturing. Fluorescent bulbs and tubes contain mercury, a highly toxic material.

The USGBC has over 35 chapters nation wide. The Northern California Chapter includes over 1,300 members. A complete list of Affinity Partners and member benefits can be viewed on the USGBC Northern California Chapter website.

  • Energy-Efficient LED Lights Help to Keep Green RV Moving

Posted on January 9th, 2012 admin No comments

The Green RV at Night a Glow with Color Changing LED LightsElemental LED, A San Francisco Bay Area based LED lighting company, announced that it is a sponsor of On the Green Road, a recent project by Bay Area-based environmentalists Cece Reinhardt and Brenda Daugherty who retrofitted a 2003 Airstream so that it could operate sustainably off the grid. Elemental LED outfitted the Airstream with LED lighting inside and out, which is integral to keeping the Airstream’s energy-consumption low. Reinhardt and Daugherty have now been on the road with the green RV for four months.

Reinhardt and Daugherty aim to travel around the U.S. in the retrofitted Airstream hauled by a bio-fueled Dodge Ram. They are currently holding open houses, attending conventions, and educating the public about sustainable living along the way. So far their travels have included Santa Cruz CA, Ashland OR, Tucson AZ and Austin TX. On the Green Road will be hosting an open house outside Elemental LED headquarters in Emeryville, CA on March 3, 2012.

The LED lights on the green RV work in conjunction with two solar panels installed on the roof of the Airstream, and a battery with a monitor so Reinhardt and Daugherty can track their energy use.

“The LEDs hardly budge the battery charge at all,” reports Reinhardt from the road in Comfort, Texas. “The most common comment we get from visitors is how strong the amount of light is and how soft and natural the quality is. People seem to think that LEDs are aggressive and not attractive, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Visitors are excited to learn about alternatives to CFL and incandescent lighting.”

The interior of the RV is outfitted with dimmable LED strip lights and diffusers in the kitchen, dinette, bathroom and reading areas. “We love using the dimming light strips; they offer wonderful mood lighting without the glare of being in our direct line of sight,” says Reinhardt. LED puck lights on 12V dimmers create general area lighting throughout the interior of the RV.

Waterproof color-changing LED strip lights outfit the exterior of the RV, creating a dramatic glow on the Airstream’s metal finish during the evenings. “The outside waterproof lights add great night lighting.  They are currently set to green and we used them every night in December to be in the holiday spirit,” added Reinhardt.

Other green components that Reinhardt and Daugherty used to retrofit the Airstream include earth plaster walls and ceilings by American Clay, a composting toilet by Nature’s Head, Vida cork planks and natural linoleum flooring, Paperstone and natural linoleum counter tops, and Madagascar Ebony Echo Wood veneer cabinets by Hardwoods Inc among others. Their 2006 Dodge Ram is fueled with waste vegetable oil.

Elemental LED teamed up with On the Green Road in 2010 when Reinhardt and Daugherty were beginning the Airstream retrofit. “It has been amazing to see an outdated 2003 Airstream gutted and transformed into a sustainable living space. It is definitely an eco-traveler’s dream and I am proud that Elemental LED played a part in the transformation,” says Elemental LED Marketing Manager Charlotte Dick.

  • Diamond Jo Casino Hits the Green Jackpot with Cree Lighting

Posted on October 25th, 2011 admin No comments

Lowa-based Diamond Jo Casino, a gambling establishment located on the popular Port of Dubuque, recently installed energy-efficient LED lighting by Cree, Inc. (NASDAQ: CREE). The casino upgraded its existing lighting to Cree’s LRP-38™ LED spotlights throughout the 188,000 square foot entertainment facility, including the gaming floor, hallways, reception and meeting rooms.

“By upgrading our casino with energy-efficient LED lighting we are continuing ourmitment to saving money, sustainable practices and improving the quality of life in themunity in which we work and live,” said Todd Moyer, General Manager of Diamond Jo.

Diamond Jo Casino replaced 750 of its existing incandescent down lights with Cree LRP-38 LED lamps. Since the casino lights remain on at all times, installing LRP-38 lamps, which are designed to last 35,000-50,000 hours (depending on application), can result in significant energy and maintenance savings. By eliminating the need for regular bulb replacements and associated labor costs, Diamond Jo anticipates reducing maintenance costs by nearly $23,000 a year while providing high-quality lighting throughout its facility. According to Chad Darter, Director of Facilities at Diamond Jo Casino, the long lifetime and high color quality of the LED lighting is a great match for the 24/7 operation of the casino.

“We looked at almost 30 other LED lamp options and knew right away when we saw the LRP-38 that it offered the exact color we wanted and had the right amount of lumens for our gaming floor and customers. In addition, switching over to Cree LED lighting has freed up two man hours per day, seven days a week because the maintenance crew is no longer replacing lamps. That’s an estimated 60 hours per month in labor savings,” Darter said.

According to lighting contractor Crescent Electric Supplypany, switching to Cree’s LRP-38 lamps, which consume only 11 watts of powerpared to 100 watts from the original PAR-38 incandescent lamps, can save Diamond Jo Casino more than $46,000 in electrical costs annually. These savings, bined with anticipated maintenance savings result in a payback calculation of nearly one year for the installation with an ongoing annual savings of almost $70,000.

“The long-term lighting needs of 24/7 establishments like Diamond Jo Casino are continuing to drive the adoption of LEDs,” said Craig Lofton, Cree, vice president of sales, LED Lighting. “High-quality lightbined with significant energy and maintenance savings can provide a quick return on investment that helps business owners realize it is payback time for the LED lighting revolution.”

The casino was built in 2007 specifically to achieve “carbon neutral” certification under the Clean Air Conservancy's NetZero program. In addition to the energy-efficient LED lighting, the casino’s other green features include: a white roof designed to reflect heat and conserve energy, bar floor of reclaimed wood and a central plant heating and cooling system. In its partnership with the Clean Air Conservancy, Diamond Jo initiated the “Go Green Challenge” for Dubuque residents and businesses, as well as the Diamond Conservation Fund, including an annualmitment from the casino to help fund conservation efforts within itsmunity.
