At the moment there are two main alternatives to incandescent light bulbs. These are standard energy savers, also known as compact fluorescent lighting (CFL), and light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Which one to choose it not always clear, but before making your decision, you may want to consider the following:
LEDs are more efficient than CFLs
Both CFLs and LEDs use less energy than incandescent bulbs. But whereas a typical CFL uses between 9 and 11 watts, an equivalent LED bulb will only use between 4 and 6 watts. This makes LED bulbs more cost effective to use and more environmentally friendly.
LED bulbs last longer than CFLs
An LED will last between 30,000 and 50,000 hours, depending on the model and manufacturer. For an average of 5 hours use a day, this works out to around 10 years. By comparison, a CFL bulb will only manage 8,000 hours, sometimes even less.
LEDs are safer than CFLs
Like all fluorescent lighting, CFLs contain mercury vapour, which is harmful to living organisms and the environment. When you throw your CFLs away you will need to take them to a special recycling facility. LED bulbs contain no harmful substances, making them much safer to use and easier to recycle.
LED bulbs come on straight away; CFLs do not
Switch on a CFL and you may need to wait a few moments before it achieves full brightness. This is not the case with LEDs, which come on instantaneously.
CFLs produce a much “colder” light than incandescent bulbs, which many people find unappealing. LEDs are able to replicate the warmth of an incandescent bulb very well.
Some CFLs can lose up to 25 per cent of their brightness halfway through their life. In contrast, an LED will remain bright throughout its entire life.
LEDs are maturing; CFLs are not
LED lighting is improving everyday. CFLs have changed little since they first appeared back in the nineties. This lack of development is a very telling sign and confirms more than ever that CFLs are set to become a transitional technology, bridging the gap between incandescent bulbs and CFLs.
Unfortunately, LED bulbs are still more expensive than CFLs. But this cost is steadily coming down. It is also worth remembering that, as LEDs last longer and use less energy, they are a more cost effective solution in the long term.
While CFLs have been a great way to save energy in the past, it is time for them to move aside and let LEDs take their rightful place.

If a city can replace all of its older street lights with led street lights it saves money. That’s the bottom line. An led street light is energy efficient and lasts a long time. lighting market, two scenarios are evaluated considering light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and one considering organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). At today energy prices, that would equate to approximately $15 billion in energy savings in that year alone. Assuming the same mix of generating power stations, these savings would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31.4 million metric tons of carbon. today.
implications are obvious. Cities must establish a financial plan to convert to LED. To help municipalities get started in evaluating a solid state lighting plan the DOE has set up a consortium. The consortium is also open to manufacturers, utilities, and energy efficiency organizations. Seattle City Light utility has been chosen to lead the consortium. Their customers have the lowest energy bills of anyone in the country.
very one sided view. you make it seem like a no-brainer when it is not. how about the 10x+ upfront investment? do municipalities have the money or credit to do that? the payback on street lights if you include the upfront costs for street lights that are switched on 12 hours / day vs. linear fluorescent is > 10 years. In my opinion, this is too early for municipalities to make the shift. If we see price erosion by 30-50% in next 2-3 years, it may make more sense with payback falling in the 5 year range
I don’t understand how anyone could be against doing such a thing. I’m not saying don’t be critical, because people should be critical, but my point is the fact that out of everything you could of possibly said, or commented on, you chose to be entirely bashful towards LED adoption, and I think that just sucks that your views led you to do that. There are times to be overly critical, but in our energy crisis right now, I think you are wrong sir.
Where are you getting these numbers from cynic? The initial investment on LED street lighting is approximately 2-3 times that of traditional lighting coupled with the fact they normally pay themselves off with in 3-4 years. You should google LED pilot programs and you would see that cities such as Seattle, Ann Arbor, Bostson, etc. are all benefiting from the use of LEDs.

Why do we sink for LED high bay extrusion process do you use? Macaroni and cheese is delicious, and for the same reason.

Buick is trying hard to not to be your Chinese grandfather’s car. They appear to be headed in the right direction. Sales in China accounted for about 77 percent of the brand’s global total last year. Five years ago the average age of its buyers was 64. market in the next 12 months. The average age of their buyers has already dropped to 57.
Buick’s marketing manager for crossovers spoke at the show in front of a refreshed 2013 Enclave – the company’s relatively new flagship vehicle. He was full of good news about the company’s healthy sales and the new, younger direction of their brand. This year’s updates to the Enclave backed up his spiel with visible proof Buick is using it as a platform to attract buyers with longer life expectancies.
Most noticeably the Enclave’s headlight design is sleeker with standard HIDs and LED daytime running lights. The high-intensity light scheme combined with a much larger grill gives the new Enclave an increasingly modern appeal, one that should appeal to buyers who want a little sexy from their family hauler.
Inside Buick didn’t try jump the shark by stuffing the Enclave with cutting edge millennial technology. They did make encouraging advancements with a larger touch screen and an Intellilink infotainment system that is now standard. Making further use of the LED mojo, a thin strip of Ice Blue LED lighting now adorns the door panels and dash to illuminate the cabin with a pleasant glow at night.

The Chinese Lantern Festival has been one of the most important festivities in China since the Han Dynasty. It is known as the Yuanxiao Festival in Chinese, which is also the name of the famous rice balls the Chinese eat during the festival.
It takes place on the fifteenth day of the first month of the Chinese New Year, or around February/March according to the Gregorian calendar. On the fifteenth day, the full moon is always visible. Children, with bright and cheerful lanterns in hand, visit temples with their parents, responding to riddles attached to the lanterns of others, and receiving gifts if they correctly guess the riddle’s answer.

While there are many legends associated with the origin of the Chinese Lantern Festival, the fact remains that nobody really knows for sure how the festival came into being. What we do know is that it symbolises unity within the family and positive relationships between people.
One of the most probable legends is that of Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty. After seeing the monks of his kingdom worship the remains of the Buddha by lighting lanterns, Wudi decided to follow suit by decorating his palace with lanterns as well. He then claimed that the Chinese Lantern Festival was to become one of the most significant celebrations of the year.
Other legends are more fanciful, such as the legend of the Jade Emperor and the crane, and the tale of the maid Yuan-Xiao and the emperor’s advisor Mr. Eastern. (To read about these two legends in detail, visit Wikipedia.)

Light emitting diode, or LED, lights are the next phase in the evolution of artificial lighting. The process started with camp fires; the next step was candles. The big leap came when Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb in 1879. Since 1879 a vast number of improvements have been made to develop better lighting. The most popular light for industrial and commercial use is the fluorescent lamp.
Fluorescent lamps work by an electrical current passing through the lamp’s electrodes vaporizing the liquid mercury. The mercury with its electrons excited release energy in the form of photons when the electrons return to their original level. The photons that are produced then hit the phosphorus coating of the tube which releases more light photons.
LED lights do not have mercury problem. They run by a semi-conductor (diode) with extra electrons coming in contact with a semi-conductor with extra holes with extra positive charged particles. The result is the release of light. LED lights are full color spectrum which is easy on the eyes when doing a lot of reading. The most important asset LED’s have is their low power usage. Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED tubes will cut power use in half. For example a 16 watt LED tube will replace a 32 watt fluorescent tube.
The next light evolutionary step is companies making LED tubes to replace fluorescent tubes. These are a two companies in particular that produce LED tubes Lights Orient from China and TEU Services from Texas. Round incandescent shaped LED lamps are available for a viable replacement for standard incandescent bulbs and spiral fluorescents. The round LED’s are in 3 watt and 5 watt to replace 20 and 40 watt incandescents or 9 watt spirals. LED lights are also available for replacing high bay metal halide or high pressure sodium lamps.
Now that the technology is available it is the responsibility of the people to choose to use safer and energy efficient products. Imagine how bright the casinos in Reno would shine with LED’s in place.

The town is isolated on an island in the Puget Sound, with a small 2-lane bridge and ferry as your only methods of escape. Chypre: This includes fragrances built on a parallel accord consisting of bergamot, oakmoss, patchoulii, and labdanum. This family of fragrances is named after a perfume by Francois Coty. A prominent example is Mitsouko (a popular name for girls in Japanese) by Guerlain.
Fougere: Built on a base of lavender, coumarinn and oakmoss. Houbigant’s Fougère Royale established the use of this base. Many men’s fragrances belong to this family of fragrances, which is distinguished by its sharp herbaceous and woody scent.
Aquatic, Oceanic, or Ozonic: the newest category in perfume history, emerging in 1991 with Christian Dior’s Dune. A very clean, modern smell leading to many of the modern genderless perfumes. Generally contains calone, a synthetic scent discovered in 1966. Also used to accent floral, oriental, and woody fragrances.
Citrus: An old fragrance family that until recently consisted mainly of “freshening” eau de colognes, due to the low persistence of citrus scents. Improvement of newer fragrance compounds has allowed for the conception of primarily citrus fragrances.
Fruity: attributing the aromas of fruits other than citrus, such as peach, cassis (black currant), mango, passion fruit, and others.
Gourmand: scents with “edible” or “dessert”-like persona. These often include notes like vanilla, Tonka bean and coumarin.
Perfumes today are being made and used in various ways than in earlier centuries. Perfumes are being produced more and more commonly with synthetic chemicals rather than natural oils. Less condensed forms of perfume are also becoming gradually popular. Mixed, these factors reduce the cost of the scents, encouraging more common and frequent, often daily, use.
Using perfume to heal, make people feel good, and get better relationships between the sexes are the new boundaries being discovered by the industry. The sense of smell is measured a right brain activity, which rules emotions, memory, and creativity.
