Taiwan’s Power-supply Makers to Benefit from LED Lighting
Posted on March 1st, 2012 No commentsTaiwan’s major power-supply makers branching out into LED lighting manufacturing, including Delta Electronics Inc., AcBel Polytech Inc., Phihong Technology Co., and Leader Electronics Inc., estimate sales of their LED lamps to take off in 2012.
They made the prediction based on the bright growth forecast mostly on the implementation of bans on incandescent bulb consumption beginning this year in many advanced economies, mainland China’s new round of subsidization on LED lighting estimated to begin this year, and LED replacements for 40W incandescent bulbs dropping below US$10 in retail price in South Korea.
As the lamps operate on power converters and transformers, which are crucial devices in power supplies, LED lighting has become a new revenue source for Taiwan’s power-supply makers.
For example, Delta has benefited many contracts to supply LED streetlights from Taiwan and mainland China. In addition, its LED light bulbs are now available in Europe and Japan. It estimates the revenue from LED lighting sales to double to US$50 million this year from 2011. AcBel has also acquired LED streetlights contracts in several of the mainland’s LED-streetlight demonstration projects, as well as has landed contracts to supply Japanese retailers LED light bulbs.

Philips Announces OLED Lighting Roadmap for Decorative and Performance Lighting
Posted on February 28th, 2012 No commentsRecently, Philips has come out a new roadmap for their OLED lighting products which are divide into two families – one for decorative lighting and one for performance lighting.
According to the company, the decorative panels are normally reflective in the off state, and it will offer transparent ones as soon as next year. Color tunable and transparent panels will arrive in 2018. And Philips predicts that by then it’ll be able to offer 1×1 meter panels.

The downside of the decorative panels is the efficiency: In 2015 these panels will offer only 15 lm/W (that’s only marginally better than an incandescent lamp). By 2018, those large flexible panels will offer 35 lm/W – which is still very low (Fluorescent lamps today offer 70-100 lm/W).The second product family is the performance panels. These aren’t reflective, and will remain rigid even in 2018. But Philips plans to reach 130 lm/W by 2018, an intensity of over 5,000 cd/m2 and a CRI of over 95.

Many analysts project that OLED lighting will take off in 2014-2015, and it seems that at least from the technology point of view, Philips will be ready. -
