  • LED and Solar Lights Are Easy on Holiday Budget

Posted on October 24th, 2011 admin No comments

Lighting up the home for the season is a great way to add warmth and a touch of holiday spirit. Both solar and LED lights are great options for those looking to save energy and keep on budget.

The lighting team at Canadian Tire has some holiday d?cor ideas that add warmth and beauty without breaking the bank:

    THE BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTS

    – Energy efficiency – LED lights use 80-95 per cent less energy than conventional lighting, saving money on energy bills.

    – Safety – LED lights are made of non-flammable plastic epoxy that won't break, even when stepped on, and they run cool to the touch, making them a safe alternative for families with young children.

    – Convenience – LED lights last up to seven times longer than traditional holiday lights, with a bulb life of 200,000 hours. They also require no replacement bulbs and have end-to-end connectors, that makes it easy to plug in multiple sets.

    – Style — LED lights have a unique shape and shimmer that provide a beautiful, bright look both indoors and out.

    THE BENEFITS OF SOLAR LIGHTS

    – Energy efficiency – Solar lights are charged during the day from the sun's light.

    – Safety — With solar lighting there is no risk of electrocution and the lights are cool to the touch, making them safe for children and pets.

    – Convenience – Solar technology can charge lights even on cloudy, winter days.

    – Easy Installation – Solar lights can be placed anywhere outside your home without the hassle of extension cords.

    DECORATING WITH LED LIGHTS

    – Adorning the outside of the house with lights and decorations immediately sets a festive tone for family and friends. Try new LED fashion glow lights available in trendy colours such as tanzanite, lime green, purple and burgundy.

    DECORATING WITH SOLAR LIGHTS

    – Wire frame characters like reindeer, add a fun touch to the outdoors and are great for kids.

    – Look for wire frame figures that use warm white solar lights for a coordinated look.

  • Citizen Quadruples Brightness of White LED

Posted on October 24th, 2011 admin No comments

Citizen Electronics Co Ltd developed a white LED whose maximum brightness is 17,675lm.

This is the first time in the world that the brightness of a white LED has far exceeded 10,000lm, thepany said.

When the brightness of the white LED, “CLL-050 Series,” is at its maximum, the input power and luminous efficiency are 183.9W and 96lm/W, respectively (when light is continuously emitted from the LED and the case temperature is 25°C). The new LED can replace a 300W mercury lamp, Citizen said.

The LED has a general color rendering index (Ra) of 65 and a color temperature of 5,000K. The maximum brightness of Citizen's existing white LEDs that are designed to emit a large amount of light is 4,390lm. So, thepany improved brightness by four times.

Also, Citizen will provide white LEDs whose Ra is 80 and color temperature ranges from 2,700 to 5,000K. Though they have lower brightnesses than the white LED with an Ra of 65, even the LED with a color temperature of 3,000K has a brightness of 14,290lm.

The dimensions and thickness of the CLL-050 Series are 38 x 38mm and 1.4mm, respectively. Its input power ranges from 24.6 to 183.9W. When the input power is 24.6W, the luminous efficiency of the LED with an Ra of 65 is about 117lm.

The CLL-050 Series has a circular light-emitting layer at the center of its quadrangular package. It has a structure in which multiple blue LED chips are mounted on an aluminum substrate and the entire device is covered with resin mixed with a fluorescent material.

For the former product, Citizen arranged blue LED chips in a quadrangular shape on the circular light-emitting layer. But, this time, thepany arranged them in a circular shape so that light emission does not be spotty when the white LED is mounted on an apparatus.

In addition to the CLL-050 Series, Citizen announced four series of white LEDs that have different packages. Their maximum brightnesses are 590, 1,970, 5,780 and 12,915lm, respectively. Because the five series cover brightnesses from 95 to 17,675lm, it is possible to replace a wide variety of lamps from a 10W incandescent light bulb to 300W mercury lamp, thepany said.

  • Global House’s Replacement Lights May Cost Nearly $6,000

Posted on October 24th, 2011 admin No comments

A Works and Engineering van parked on the sidewalk outside Global House on Thursday contains old light fixtures that were removed and replaced from inside the building. The cost of replacing the old lights may cost nearly $6,000.

Government is understood to have so far ordered less than a quarter of Global House’s replacement lights from a second electricalpany.

Works and Engineering staff were this week instructed to rip-out the controversial LED fixtures and replace them with fluorescent tube lights.

The replacement of the potentially dangerous lights came just four days after The Royal Gazette revealed they breached health and safety regulations, as well as building and electrical codes.

But The Royal Gazette can now reveal that only about 300 of the 1,300 fluorescent lights needed for the building refit have been purchased from ESC Limited of Pembroke.

Premier Paula Cox and Deputy Premier and Public Works Minister Derrick Burgess have repeatedly refused to say how much the new lights cost and whether taxpayers will foot the bill.

But the retail price of each light is said to be about $4.50, so Government is understood to have handed over about $1,350 of a repair job which could cost a total of about $5,850.

Government is understood to have called in newpany ESC Limited after being unhappy with the work provided by Electrical Technology Management (ETM).

Mr Burgess went against the advice of technical officers and gave the go-ahead for ETM to install the environmentally-friendly LED lamps about two years ago at a cost of about $100,000.

But Government workers immediately started to raise health concerns about the ‘cave effect’ of the blue-tinted lights.

Then on Monday The Royal Gazette published a report by the Electrical Section of the Ministry of Works and Engineering highlighting a series of errors about the LED installation.

The damning report stated that no proper feasibility study was carried out, technical officers had raised concerns in advance about poor lighting levels, the lights installed were not certified with a recognised electrical testing laboratory, and an electrical permit for the lights was not applied for.

  • Ikea to Sell Low-Cost LED Bulbs from Lemnis

Posted on October 24th, 2011 admin No comments

The twopanies have a multiyear partnership to sell LED bulbs through Ikea stores starting in Europe, Lemnis Lighting CEO Warner Philips said today. The partnership was first reported by trade publication LEDs Magazine.

The collaboration is designed to make normally pricey LED bulbs appealing to consumers. In Europe the price target with tax is about 10 euros, or less than $14, for a 400 lumen lamp, which gives about the same light as a 45-watt incandescent. A 25-watt replacement will cost with tax about 7 euros, or less than $10.

The Pharox bulbs for Ikea will have relatively high light quality with a color rendering index (CRI) over 85 and a warm color at 2,700 Kelvin, Warner confirmed.

“This is going to be massive…. This is the sort of partnership that will help move markets,” he said. “We need partnerships to bring down price by selling through innovative channels…and we need volume to bring the price down to get decent margins.”

Lemnis Pharox bulbs are designed to work between 10 and 20 years, depending on how often they are used, and to be energy efficient. For example, the Pharox 400-lumen bulb consumes 8 watts, versus 45 watts for an incandescent.

pany Chief Technology Officer Martijn Dekker told LEDs Magazine that the twopanies have created a “virtual vertically integratedpany” where they collaborate on production, which will be done in India, and share project risk.

Ikea in January of this year stopped sales of incandescent lights in its U.S. stores in advance of a mandate to phase out incandescents starting next year. Thepany sells halogens that meet new efficient standards, pact florescent lamps, and a line of fixtures that use LEDs.

Through the Lemnis Lighting partnership, Ikea in Europe will now sell general-purpose, omnidirectional bulbs with the traditional screw-in bottom.

Lemnis Lighting is working on a line of brighter Pharox bulbs, which will be EnergyStarpliant, Philips said. Thepany's goal is to have a product line of about 20 bulbs that will are suitable to replace about 80 percent of the lights in a home, he said.

  • LED Lights on Capital’s Salam Street

Posted on October 24th, 2011 admin No comments

The newly-opened Salam Street surface roads has been installed with LED lighting system to reduce power consumption and decrease carbon emissions.

The Abu Dhabi Municipality haspleted the installation andmissioning of 50 traffic signal poles fitted with 206 bulbs, and 120 decorative street lighting poles fitted with LED lighting system along thepleted surface roads.

The LED system ensures lighting over extended periods with minimal maintenance requirements and reduces power consumption to the least possible level, thus contributing to minimising carbon dioxide emissions and conserving the environment.

Abdullah Saeed Al Shamsi, Acting Executive Director of Municipal Infrastructure and Assets Sector at the municipality, said the central lighting system of Salam Street was aimed to conform to the highest standards of safety and security for road users including the use of the most sophisticated lighting system in the globe.

The LED system enables control of the lighting levels by adjusting it if necessary. It is linked to the power supply system as a backup for the automatic lighting system in case of emergency in a way ensuring uninterrupted lighting of the tunnels of Salam Street, Al Shamsi said.

The system, which also provides automatic monitoring of traffic movement, includes many subsystems for controlling and monitoring the tunnel lighting, fire fighting, smoke discharge, temperature level, and toxic gases in addition to offering information related to types of vehicles, vehicular speed, and intensity of traffic movement, he said.

The features of the LED system enable better control of the lightpared to the conventional luminaries, which will result in less light spill and uniform distribution of light on targeted areas.

The tunnel lighting is fully dimmable. In accordance with the external lighting levels, the internal tunnel lighting will be dimmed automatically to ensure a smooth transition for drivers going in or out of the tunnel.

Uponpletion of the project, the street will have a capacity to handle 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions  which will ensure smooth traffic flow by offering an alternative that will bypass the light signals of Salam Street in a non-stop journey across Abu Dhabi Island from Shaikh Zayed Bridge up to Mina.

Because of the affordable price and environment friendly feature, Chinese multi-colour lights are popular with Indian customers in this Diwali.

Sources have shown that the demand for fancy Chinese lights has increased manifold in the past few years. In contrast, the demands for candles had reduced but these are still in the market. But the earthen lamps had almost vanished.

According to Dheeraj, owner of shop at Ram Narain Bazaar, “The demand for Chinese lights had increased amazingly. Last year, we almost ran out of stock. This year, the demands is expected to reach to new heights.”

According to the survey, people choose Chinese lamps mainly base on these following reasons. The affordable pricees firstly. The designer LED bulbs are available at Rs 30 per piece, a set of four crystal balls for Rs 150 and Ganesh showpiece with LED lights ranges from Rs 150 to Rs 300. Whereas, the Chinese lamps cost between Rs 50 and Rs 100.

Secondly, there are various forms to be chose. Among these, pipe light (Rs 30 per metre) and chip light (Rs 660 per five metres) aremon and high in demand. Also huge star light (Rs 150), heart light (Rs 150), peacock wing (Rs 175), 'Swastik' (Rs 160) and 'Om' (Rs 150) (all LED lights) are the other items in demand.

The only thing Indian about the Chinese lights are the interesting names. There is 'magic' light that exhibits a change in colour within a short span of time. 'Damru lights' with countless mini-bulbs in a row is another attraction.

These lights can be bought at Rs 60 per piece (per piece and includes about 40 bulbs). The four-in-one 'crystal gola' exhibits various hues of red, green, orange and blue, said Abdul, a light shop owner on Birhana Road.
