  • Fairchild Semiconductor’s Smart LED Lamp Driver IC Solves Small-Space Dimming Challenges for Designers

Posted on October 21st, 2011 admin No comments

As LED lighting continues to grow in popularity, especially in residential lighting applications, designers are looking for efficient dimming solutions – whenpared to TRIAC methods – that also fit within existing sockets. Additionally, these solutions need to work reliably in a small space while providing high efficiency.

To help designers meet this challenge, Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS), a leading global supplier of high performance power and mobile products, developed the FL7701 Smart Non-isolated Buck LED Driver with power factor correction (PFC). The device uses a digital technique that allows it to automatically detect the AC input voltage condition, allowing it to create a special internal reference signal that results in high power factor correction. The FL7701 will also work from a DC input voltage condition, automatically sensing AC versus DC input voltage conditions. The traditional technique of using a transformer in an MR application incurs additional losses with the transformer conversion; this traditional inefficient method can now be replaced using the FL7701 connected directly to a DC or AC off-line input.

The FL7701bines high functional density in a small form factor that provides designers up to 20 percent lower bill of material (BOM) costs and up to 60 percent board space savings. Thisbination creates a solution suitable for the space-constrained PCB sizes found in LED lighting applications and supports analog dimming.

The high degree of integration designed into the FL7701 provides the high reliability required to increase the luminary lifespan to more than five years, pared to the three years achievable by current solutions. Reliability is also improved since no electrolytic capacitors for the input, output, or the FL7701 VDD supply are required.

Digital power factor (PF) realization (>0.9) and lower total harmonic distortion (THD), along with the 90% electrical efficiency results in increased energy savings for the end system.bined, these features allow the FL7701 to provide energy savings that meet the most stringent worldwide regulations, such as Energy Star®.

Fairchild’s IC design technology results in high power efficiency (>90 percent) and provides high light quality required for residential applications. Available in an SOP-8 package, the FL7701 is ideal for interior decorating/ornamental lights; LED light bulbs or down lights in PAR, Reflector, MR or classic styles E26/E27 or Bi-Pin base, as well as LED lamps for low power lighting fixtures.

Fairchild offers a total solution portfolio for low- (<20W), mid- (20W to 50W) and high- (>50W) LED driver applications. Our highly integrated PWM and PFC controller solutions reduceponent BOM counts to enable smaller lamp sizes and eliminate designplexities, while improving overall lighting efficiency. Fairchild’s extensive product portfolio ranges from discrete devices to integrated solutions that contain PFC controllers, high voltage gate drivers and MOSFETs. Withmitment to energy savings and meeting the most stringent regulations, Fairchild has developed innovative products that maximize performance while reducing board space, designplexity and system costs. In addition, Fairchild’s Global Power ResourceSM Centerprised of online tools, FAEs and regional centers staffed by power engineers, is the industry standard for customer design support.

  • LED Light Bulbs “Photoshop” Your Life

Posted on October 21st, 2011 admin No comments

Ah, Photoshop. It’s hard to remember a time before image editing required just a few clicks of a mouse. Not only does the ubiquitous program allow us to produce awesome images like this:

…but it also helps us “fix” our shots, bringing out the highest visual potential of our subjects. People look their best when photographed in natural daylight, and even Photoshop novices (like, ahem, the one who brought you the above image) can achieve this effect on indoor shots easily.

Now, if only we can make everything look like that in real life. Luckily, LED lighting with a high Color Rendering Index can deliver the next best thing. The Chicago LED PAR-30 with CREE XP-G LEDs makes items appear as if bathed in daylight. (That’s the standard by which CRI is measured, because the sun delivers full-spectrum color.)

Do your loved ones look jaundiced under hot incandescent lights? Or do fluorescent bulbs give them a flickery green pallor? Screw in a high CRI LED light bulb and make them look their Photoshopped best!

  • 60W Incandescent LED Lamps $36 in October

Posted on October 21st, 2011 admin No comments

IMS Research has launched a Global Monthly LED Lamp Retail Price Tracker to monitor and provide insight into the rapidly growing and changing LED lamp market.  With the phasing out of incandescent lamps and the dislike that consumers have withpact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), LED replacement lamps have an enormous opportunity as prices fall further.

According to IMS Research SVP of Displays, LEDs and Lighting Ross Young, “The number of LED lamps bing available to consumers is rapidly accelerating. This report represents the most cost effective way for lighting relatedpanies to monitor the evolution of LED lamp prices, specifications and other product trends. By having analysts in six countries and speaking six different languages, IMS Research is in a unique position to track the evolution of LED lamp prices both in-store and online.”

According to the latest analysis from IMS Research, in October 2011, the global average retail price for 60W incandescent LED replacement lamps was $36, up from $34 in the previous month. Global changes in price were mostly due to fluctuations in currency values.

That being said, the average price for 60W replacement LED lamps in the US decreased mainly due to the 38% drop in the price of the Philips Ambient 60W replacement lamp from $40 to $25. This change is extremely important as 60W incandescent lamps are the most widely installed lamp in the world today.  In the residential sector in North America alone, there are more than 2 billion of these lamps installed.

IMS Research also found a significant variation in the price of these lamps by region.  Germany has the most expensive lamps, priced at $70, while in Taiwan; equivalent lamps are priced at $19.

According to IMS Research Lighting Market Analyst Philip Smallwood, “The LED lamp market is going to evolve at a breakneck pace in theing years.  New brands, improvements in the technology, consumer awareness and government regulations are all driving the demand for these lamps. With price being one of the most important purchasing decision factors for consumers and a healthy oversupply in the LED space as quantified in our Quarterly LED Supply/Demand Report, it will be exciting to see how quickly prices drop around the world.”

During this research, it was also found that a lack of product standards has led to a large amount of replacement lamps being mislabelled or misrepresented. Byparing advertised replacement types with actual lumen output, IMS Research found that more than 20% of all LED lamps were mislabelled and did not meet the minimum lumen requirements to be considered as replacements.

  • TILS 2012:Tridonic Intrduces Powerful LEDs for downlights and spotlights High quality of light and a wide range of applications

Posted on October 21st, 2011 admin No comments

Tridonic is launching LED systems for a wide range of downlight and spotlight solutions. TALEXXengine STARK DLE and STARK SLE are each available in three versions and offer excellent colour rendering and colour stability.

The SLE and DLE modules have a constant colour location across the entire temperature range so the colour temperature does not change as the ambient temperature changes. What’s more, the colour location remains constant throughout the entire life of the module.

In developing the products, LED specialists at Tridonic based their designs on the mechanical, optical and thermal standards of the luminaire industry. All the systemponents are matched to one another and highly efficient. This means that lighting solutions based on these products are both functional and economical. To simplify integration in luminaires, the systemprises threeponents, namely the LED module, the multi-functional LED converter and ready-made cabling for connecting the module to the converter, equipped with Plug`n Play connectors for simple installation.

STARK DLE and STARK SLE are available in CLASSIC, SELECT and PREMIUM versions. These provide a wide range of possible solutions: from the non-dimmable basic version in colour temperatures of 3000 K and 4000 K to fully controllable and dimmable white light (Tunable White) in the colour temperature range from 2700 K to 6500 K. The tunable white version enables the colour temperature to be adjusted according to the specific application. It can be either fixed or flexible. This means that the luminaire manufacturer or the end customer can set the light colour to be best possible value for the particular application. And together with the dimming option the light can be adjusted with a high degree of flexibility, for example for seasonal displays in stores.

System efficiency is certainly impressive, with the DLE module achieving up to 65lm/W, and the SLE module up to 72lm/W. Colour rendering is also remarkable. Both modules have a CRI in excess of 90 and up to MacAdam 3 SDCM for extremely small colour tolerances.

Engineers at Tridonic envisage typical applications for TALEXXengine STARK DLE and STARK SLE to include downlights and spotlights for general illumination, for example in retail outlets, offices and hotels.

The range of applications is extended by different interfaces.
Integrated DALI functionality enables colours and colour temperatures to be controlled via a digital control signal. The integrated switchDIM function allows a standard momentary-action switch to be connected directly for dimming purposes. The integrated colourSWITCH function on the Premium version allows a standard momentary-action switch to be connected directly for changing the colour temperature.

Tridonic sees itself as a one-stop supplier of LED systems with operating equipment. The product portfolio includes individual light points, round, rectangular and strip versions. Specially matched operating equipment such as converters, amplifiers and sequencers formplete system solutions. Customers enjoy the security of a five-year guarantee.
