Sharp to Introduce High-Power LED Lighting Devices
Posted on September 30th, 2011 No commentsSharp Corporation has developed and will introduce a high-power LED lighting device that features the industry’s highest luminous efficacy of 93.3 lm/W (lumens/watt) in the 50W input power class as a light source for applications such as downlighting in retail stores.
LED lighting is rapidly increasing in popularity based on its superior characteristics such as long service life and low energy consumption. In the future, lighting sources for applications such as downlighting and spotlights in retail stores are expected to shift to higher-power LEDs.
This newly developed device, the GW5DME30MR5, incorporates an LED chip with high emission efficiency combined with a proprietary blend of phosphors. As a result, it achieves a luminous efficacy of 93.3 lm/W, the industry's highest in the 50W input power class, at the 3000K color temperature commonly used in downlights for retail stores and with a color rendering index*2 (Ra) of 83. It achieves high energy-saving performance. In addition, proprietary package technology provides for greater color consistency*3, contributing to higher quality in the design and development of lighting fixtures.
The lineup also includes high-performance models that feature a color rendering index (Ra) of greater than 90 to meet the need for light sources which require higher color rendering properties.

Epistar Strengthened Market Position in China: Epicrystal’s Changzhou Plant Inaugurated
Posted on September 29th, 2011 No commentsRecently, a plant of Epicrystal, a subsidiary of Taiwanese LED maker Epistar, in Changzhou, Jiangsu, was officially inaugurated, underlying Epistar’s endeavor of making inroads into the Chinese market.

The inauguration ceremony of Epicrystal

Mr. Biing-Jye Lee, the Chairman of Epistar, addressed the audience.
Mr. Biing-jye Lee, the Chairman of Epistar, indicated that the successful inauguration of the new plant attributed to the support from shareholders and the government. He hoped that Epicrystal’s new products are able to meet the market’s needs and add diversity to Epistar’s product lineup. Epicrystal will employ the same technologies of Epistar’s plants in Taiwan in order to have a leg up on the global LED market.
Mr. Easy Hwang, President of Epicrystal
Mr. Easy Hwang, President of Epicrystal, also stated that he hoped that the new plant can not only propel the development of the LED industrial chain, but also spur cross-Strait cooperation to meet the Chinese market demand. Epicrystal will join forces with subsidiaries in the east, south, and north China, which are located in places that have easy access to the Chinese clients and the Shenzhen sales center in order to make inroads into the Chinese market.
Epistar owns several subsidiaries in China, including Luxlite (Shenzhen, Guangdong), Crystalrich (Guangdong, Guangdong), Episky (Xiamen, Fujian), ULED (Jining, Shandong) and the latest addition Epicrystal (Changzhou, Jiangsu). Light products that incorporate Epistar’s manufactures are about to enter the Chinese market.
The inauguration ceremony of Epicrystal
Epicrystal is invested and founded by Epistar, LiteOn, Konka and Episky and is Epistar’s biggest investment project in China. It is also the first time that Epistar institutes its epi wafer technology in a non-Taiwanese plant. The new plant employs about 250 workers with a registered capital of US$ 120 million and an overall investment of US$ 360 million. The plant mainly engages in the development and manufacture of LEDs, epi wafers and LED wafers, and it also provides technology consulting service.

Alternative Light Bulbs Improving
Posted on September 28th, 2011 No commentsThe light bulb aisle isn't as simple as it used to be. From CFLs to LEDs to new halogen incandescents, there are a lot of choices. With new federal regulations about to take effect, it's a good time to consider your lighting options.
New federal rules on energy efficiency take effect in January and start the official phase out of standard incandescent light bulbs. There's no need to hoard them, though. The most popular 60-watt size can be made until 2014. In the meantime, the good news is that alternatives are improving.
Consumer Reports tested light emitting diodes, or LEDs, which use even less energy than CFLs. Testers tried the bulbs in a lab and at home.
“You want a light bulb that's as close to the incandescent. It has warm color. This LED happens to be a lot like that,” said tester Kimberly Janeway.
LED bulbs are very expensive and can cost anywhere from $17 for a table lamp bulb to more than $60 for a floodlight, but they can be worth it.
“Even with an LEDs high cost, you can still save $100 or more over its life compared to a standard incandescent,” said Consumer Reports’ Bob Markovich.
LEDs also last much longer, some as long as 9,000 hours. Incandescents only last 1,000 to 2,000 hours.
“LEDs have some distinct advantages over CFLs. They reach full brightness instantly, and some are also better at dimming,” Markovich said.
Not all LEDs are good at distributing light. A Sylvania 60-watt Ultra LED shines most of its light up towards the ceiling, which is not very helpful for reading.
For table or floor lamps, Consumer Reports recommends the $40 Philips Ambient. It's the equivalent of a 60-watt incandescent bulb and claims to last almost 23 years.
For outdoor floodlights, the EcoSmart bulb (Par 38) costs $45 and promises to last even longer.
If you replace an incandescent bulb with an LED, Consumer Reports says it will take four to 10 years before you recoup the costs and start saving. CFLs cost much less and will save you money much sooner.

Cornish Church to Use Modern Technology
Posted on September 28th, 2011 No commentsA project to replace expensive spotlights with cheaper LED bulbs could help a Cornish church dramatically reduce its electricity bill.
Camborne Parish Church wants to invest £10,000 in a new lighting system to save money in the long term.
After reinstating the outside lighting with gas lamp replicas, Rector Mike Firbank is turning his attention to the inside of the building.
The energy efficient LED lights will replace the old and expensive spotlights.
The church has recently installed solar panels on the roof of the Cecil Norman building in the church graveyard.
It now provides green electricity for the many groups who use the building daily.
Rector Firbank said: “The LED lights give a bright clear light and reduces the electricity cost to about 10% of what we're paying.
“We have some test ones in already. When you sit in the aisle where the LED lights are with a book you get a clear light. But when you go and sit under the normal bulb, some of the pages are quite shaded.”
The church had hoped it had funding in place last year, but because of the economic climate, the parishioners are now having to source the funding from elsewhere.
Once the church has its LED lights in place, Rector Firbank has more plans.
