Changzhi , the city in southeastern Shanxi province, China is to develop its LED industry to boost the city’s economy.

According to the city s mayor Zhang Bao, the coal industry “has once contributed much to Changzhi, but over-dependence on the industry led to difficulties,” so they “made a strategic choice to seek some new sources of development.” The LED industry is one of the solutions.

The LED industry is believed to be a new engine to boost the Changzhi's economy with the nation's only one full LED industrial chain established there.

With two years' effort, the city has built a large-scale LED industry cluster. It will be the world's first LED industry park with an integrated industrial chain.

  • China Joins U.S., Europe in Incandescent Bulb Ban

    LED light fixtures

Much like the US plan, which will phase out 100W or higher incandescent bulbs by  January, 2012, China recently unveiled its three-step plan for stopping the sale and import of energy-wasting incandescent lamps. Not surprisingly, shares in CREE, US-based maker of LED light fixtures, increased by almost 10% after the announcement was made.

The Xinhua News Agency asserts that the three-step plan will proceed according to the following schedule:

    ▪                100W and above – banned from October 1, 2012

    ▪                60W and above – banned from October 1, 2014

    ▪                15W and above – banned from October 1, 2016

Xie Ji, deputy director of the environmental protection department with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said, “The plan shows China’s determination to press ahead in its efforts to save energy, reduce emissions and curb climate change,” according to LEDs Magazine.

Indeed, 12 percent of China’s total electricity costs are spend on lighting, and this new strategy, which will rely heavily on the manufacture and sales of LED light bulbs, could save China “48 billion kW.hr of power per year and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 48 million tons annually,” according to LEDs Magazine.

  • LED Lighting Industry Creating New Jobs Despite Tough Times

Posted on November 26th, 2011 admin No comments

    LED lighting

In an economy in which jobs are difficult to come by (the current U.S. unemployment rate is 9.1%, and is expected to rise), it’s a relief to hear that the LED lighting industry might be able to help out a little. While most businesses are cutting back, LED light bulb manufacturer Rudd Lighting is expecting to add 469 full-time jobs over the next four years, thanks to its $24.5 million expansion project, which will include an LED assembly line and distribution center.  The expansion is due mainly to the fact that LED lighting industry leader, Cree Inc, recently purchased Rudd, a move which Cree CEO Chuck Swoboda said, “brought together two leading LED lighting companies under one roof. Last month this facility shipped its 500,000th LED luminaire—further evidence of the market demand for the latest LED technology and a need to expand our facilities to maintain our leadership of the LED lighting revolution.”

(Thanks to Journal Times for the quote.)

The new jobs created will include assembly positions, with opportunities for growth as the LED light bulb industry expands.

All offer warm white light with colour temperatures between 2500K to 2800K and operating lifetimes of 25,000 or 35,000 hours, depending on the model. E27 and MR16 3W versions are dimmable. A key feature of the E27 Classic A-Lamp with 6.5W is its CTA (Colour Temperature Adjustment) technology which mimics incandescent lights in producing a warmer tone when dimmed. This product is available now, the 9W version will be available in December. The MR16 with GU5.3 fittings 3W and a PAR16 with a GU10 socket 4W are also available now. The MR16 with 6W will be
    available in December.

The E27 Classic A lamps, available with 6.5W or 9W ratings, are designed as replacements for 20W or 40W incandescent lamps, producing 190 and 440 lumens output respectively with a colour rendering index (CRI) of at least 75 for the 6.5W lamp and 85 for the 9W model.

The MR16se in 3W and 6W types with beam angles of 30 degrees and 25 degrees and a typical CRI of 80 and luminous flux of 110 or 225 lumens respectively. The 4W PAR16 has a 28-degree beam angle and delivers 100 lumens with a luminous intensity of 380cd and CRI of typically 75.

From September 1st 2012, European legislation bans the sale of all incandescent lamps. In response to this, Verbatim is enlarging its portfolio of products to meet the growing demand for reliable, low energy lighting. Verbatim's advanced LED technology delivers energy savings of up to 80%pared with incandescent lamps, lowering energy costs and reducing CO2 emissions. The lamps produce warm white light with high quality colour rendition and most are dimmable, enabling users to create afortable domestic environment for both work and relaxation. The lamps turn on instantly and do not contain the poisonous elements found inpact fluorescent lamps, so are more environment-friendly.
