Grahame Lynch’s “The Logic of Subduction†features LED Strip Lights
Posted on December 1st, 2011 No comments
One of our customers, artist, Grahame Lynch, just wrapped up his LED-strip-lit installation “The Logic of Subduction” at the Thames Art Gallery in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. The exhibition will be traveling to the Kennedy Gallery in North Bay, Ontario and also the Esplanade Gallery in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Here is his statement about his show:
Seeing differently is a part of my everyday experience and has influenced the way I communicate as both an artist and a designer. My work is reflective of an often-obsessive desire to look at things in greater detail than I am capable of, and to commit the experience of these details to memory. It references a love of reading, and that the ability to read is the first thing I notice slipping when my vision changes. It alludes to a constant desire to see and explore places that few people have ever been—to trudge over parched terrain or through freezing water to get to places that feel secret, and look at everything with total astonishment—hoping that these are the memories I will keep, even if someday the sense of sight disappears.Â

Some of my earliest memories are of a world that constantly jittered, of falling down and staring the jitters into submission. Wrapped in these memories are the colour of the walls, the beveled glass in the front door that fragmented the view outside, and a favourite striped shirt that appeared to move on it’s own. When I read, I am reminded of these early memories and of the ways in which the world is constantly shifting. Reading is often a task of chasing words that appear to move from line to line. As fatigue sets in, entire pages tip back and forth erratically—folding in on themselves as I switch from the left eye to right, and back. I sometimes stare and realize that I have no idea what I have just read — breathe deeply, and start over.Â

My current work is an attempt to solidify this experience; it is both visual and haptic and is spatially oriented in ways that often require the viewer to look and gather, and to piece the fragments together into a poetic sense of the time and placeÂÂÂÂÂ.

For his main piece in the installation, Grahame used our Brighter flexible LED Strip Light in warm white. This piece runs 45 feet, and the lights are controlled by the 150 Watt driver and inline dimmer. Â Grahame says, “In the next installation the tables in the middle of the gallery will also be backlit with the flexible strip lighting, but this time getting power to them was a bit of a problem. The piece was designed to accommodate either situation.” He also complimented our team, “Thanks for shipping out the replacement roll so quickly! It got here just in time to finish up the installation.”

Thank you Grahame for sharing your work with us. If you would like to feature your project using our LED lights, contact us at answers@elementalled.com.

Disneyland Illuminates World Of Color with LED Lights
Posted on December 1st, 2011 No comments
As an Angelino, I had long (and somewhat gleefully) believed that my Disneyland-going days were behind me. When you live in a LA, making the traffic-ridden trek to Anaheim only to endure more congested experiences (lines, crowds, strollers and motorized scooter-mayhem) seems ludicrous. I mean, isn’t the Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade just a traffic jam dressed up with mouse ears and fireworks?
Needless to say, you can imagine my hesitation when, thanks to the holiday weekend, certain out-of-town guests suggested going to Disneyland. But go we did, and I can now report to you that despite sore feet and a slightly traumatic churro incident, I survived.
Apart from the rides and the overpriced chicken strips, the most memorable part of the experience was, of course, the RGB LED light show that capped off our day. World of Color, as it’s called, is a 25-minute water, light, music and projection show that takes place in Paradise Lake, the small body of water in Disneyland’s California Adventure. During the show, jets surrounded by color-changing LED light rings shoot water up to 200 feet in the air. The streams of water dance in time to the music, and at times create a translucent mist “screen†onto which scenes from old Disney movies are projected.

The show is actually pretty entertaining; most of all, I was impressed by the highly-saturated colors the underwater LED light fixtures were able to achieve. At times the jets of water looked like they were made of pure neon light, they were so bright!
Thanks to this brilliant LED light installation, my Disneyland experience wasn’t a total loss. In fact, I recommend going if you’ve got the time and a sizeable tolerance for screaming children. World of Color is not to be missed…just stay away from the churro stand and you should be fine.

Changzhi ,City of China to Boost Its LED Industry

According to the city s mayor Zhang Bao, the coal industry “has once contributed much to Changzhi, but over-dependence on the industry led to difficulties,” so they “made a strategic choice to seek some new sources of development.” The LED industry is one of the solutions.
