LED Lights Dazzle at the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival
Posted on January 9th, 2012 No comments
For what the US is lacking in cold weather these days, China’s got plenty. That’s a good thing, considering the annual Harbin Snow and Ice Festival commenced on Thursday, January 5th. What began 10 years ago as a small ice sculpting competition between local artisans has now turned into an internationally acclaimed event that rivals other famous ice festivals, like those found in Sapporo, Norway and Quebec.

Over 10,000 people helped to create the displays, which are some of the largest and most intricate ice sculptures in the world. And, thanks to their low temperatures, LED light bars and RGB controllers are the perfect fixtures for illuminating these beautiful frozen art installations. Festival goers can stroll between three different venues, exploring world record-holding snow sculptures longer than two football fields, and architectural marvels made of ice, including palaces, monuments and statues that stand around 160 feet tall.

So if you didn’t have a very white Christmas this year, consider taking a trip to China. The festival runs until February, and promises to be a mesmerizing—albeit cold—experience.

Thanks to The Weather Channel for the images.

My Favorite DIY LED Holiday Light Shows that You Won’t Believe
Posted on December 24th, 2011 No comments
No, these are not your typical throw-some-lights-on-a-bush-and-call-it-a-day holiday displays. These DIY hackers, geeks and freaks have taken the “festival of lights†concept to a whole new level. Combining high tech LED lighting systems with audio/visual choreography and a healthy dose of ingenuity, these families know how to get Christmas and Hanukah done right. Enjoy, and Happy Holidays! (My apologies in advance, we’re having trouble embedding the video, and need to get the right plug in. For now, please click the links to view the videos!)
A Very Dubstep Christmas
WATCH VIDEO
The Cadger family from Meridian, Idaho took two months and more than 35,000 color-changing LED lights to create this homage to dubstep, which flashes and pulses in time with the song “First Of The Year (Equinox)” by Skrillex. Here it is in action. Amazingly, the entire concept was built and designed by a father and his 16-year-old son.
Little Drummer Boy Gets Technical
WATCH VIDEO
From Fountain Valley, California, Damion Rodriguez created this dynamic and complex lighting display at a friend’s home as a memorial to another friend who passed away in May.
Rodriguez used 15 RGB controllers, 220 pieces of green LED ribbon and some LED wall washer lights to design the show, which uses 56,100 LEDs in total. Rodriguez told Wired, “The designs and patterns of his spectacle are extraordinarily varied. “Some are basic EQs, and some are plasma color washes with custom palettes masked onto another effect, 35 layers deep. The roof is sometimes a marquee with a text ticker scrolling across, with another swirling helix effect that color-fades to the music on the megatree. I’m still adding new effects every day, tweaking existing ones. Currently, I have a bank of 82 combined effects for my patch.”

Burton Installs LED Lights for Energy Conservation
Posted on December 23rd, 2011 No commentsAccording to Burton Councilman Steve Heffner, a $45,600 state grant will pay to install ballasts and buy LED lights at City Hall and the Department of Public Works and Police Administration buildings. And the grants also will pay to install the fixtures in parking lots outside the building.
Additionally, City Controller Ginger Burke-Miller disclosed that approximately $600,000 has been set aside for street lighting in the 2011-2012 budget, an increase of $100,000 from the previous year.
Thepany that did the audit, Mb Township-based LumaSmart Technology International, said the city said could save $94,929 in lighting costs — cutting wattage usage by more than 75 percent — and $52,804 in maintenance over the 11-year life expectancy of the LED lights.
As part of the grant, Burke-Miller said the city must also promote energy efficiency for homes and businesses in the city. She thought that “We can do that through educational brochures about LED lights and green business initiatives.”
Heffner said the city will be able to calculate how much the new lights are saving by looking at its prior bills.

LEDinside: LED Light Bulb Price in Japan Underwent Steep Drop in November
Posted on December 22nd, 2011 No commentsAccording to the price survey of LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce, the ASP of LED light bulbs for 40W incandescent light bulb replacement slightly decreased 2% in November, while the ASP in Japan plunged by nearly 10%. As for the LED light bulbs for 60W incandescent light bulb replacement, the ASP slightly increased, but the lowest price fell below US$ 24.
40W Equivalent LED Light Bulb Prices Underwent Steep Drop

Source: LEDinside
LEDinside’s survey indicates that even though the ASP of LED light bulbs for 40W incandescent light bulb replacement dipped merely 2%, it dropped by 10% in Japan due to the global and Japanese brand names’ increasingly aggressive price strategies. At present, the ASP of 40W replacement is at about US$ 22.6 worldwide and below US$ 20 in Japan. LEDinside indicates that the South Korean market still has the mostpetitive price (approximately US$ 11.4) for LED light bulbs for 40W replacement.
60W Equivalent LED Light Bulb Prices Plummeted Below US$ 24

Source: LEDinside
As for the prices of LED light bulbs for 60W incandescent light bulb replacement, the ASP slightly increased 2% in November due to exchange rate fluctuations and the adjustment of product strategies. The ASPs in Japan and the United States surged due to major makers launching new types of LED light bulbs. However, LEDinside finds that despite the high prices of certain new LED light bulbs resulting in higher ASP, the old light bulbs’ prices are still facing a downtrend. As a result, the light bulb prices in markets continue to fall. For example, the price of Philips’ 800lm warm white LED light bulb in the United States dropped from US$ 24.97 in October to US$ 24 in November, representing a 4% decrease.
Perspectives from LEDinside
In addition to the prominent downtrends in Europe, the United States and Japan, prices of the LED light bulbs in China begin to drop as well. LEDinside states that in terms of the high-end products (with luminous efficacy higher than 80lm/W or 800lm), manufacturers’ strength in product development will primarily determine their products’ prices. However, with the improved market acceptance, technological advancement and decreased costs, the price downtrend is expected to persist. After all, when consumers choose between products with similar specifications and qualities, price wille into play, in particular so for 400lm light bulbs.

LED Christmas Towers Shine Hope on N. Korea After Jong Il’s Death
Posted on December 22nd, 2011 No comments
In the wake of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s death, the global community is openly speculating about what might happen next for North Koreans, who have existed under one of the world’s most oppressive and dangerous regimes since the 1950s. South Korea’s response is an important part of the equation, and according to a Los Angeles Times article, the dictator’s death has left some South Korean’s feeling optimistic, while others feel anxious.
“People like Son Jeong Hun, a defector from the north struggling to fit in amid modern, bustling Seoul, hope the dictator’s demise signals a light at the end of the tunnel for their backward homeland. Others such as South Korean-born Kim Chi-guk, who sells imported chocolate at an exclusive department store, are afraid a train is barreling straight for them — maybe bristling with weapons, maybe jammed with millions of unwashed cousins who will cost them a lot of money.â€
But afraid or not, some South Koreans are taking this opportunity to send a beacon of hope, freedom of expression and religion to their North Korean neighbors, in the form of three illuminated, Christmas tree shaped towers. The towers are located very close to the tense Northern border, and are scheduled to be lit on December 23, remaining lit for 15 days.
North Korea’s state-run Uriminjokkiri website calls the gesture an example of psychological warfare and an act of propaganda, and has threatened “unexpected consequences.†“Undeterred, South Korea is continuing with plans for the festive illumination, securing the towers with an added military presence,†according to Lighting Magazine.
It is unclear what type of fixtures will illuminate the towers, but I suspect that LED lighting will play a major role. LED light bars would be the perfect choice for this job, since they are versatile, energy-efficient and bright. And since the towers will be located out-of-doors, choosing waterproof LED lights would be wise.
News like this makes me grateful to live where I do, with the freedoms I enjoy each day. And I’m proud that LED lights might get to play a small role in communicating the benefits of some of those freedoms to people who have been oppressed for so long. Here’s hoping the lighted towers bring some hope to both North and South Koreans this holiday season.
Thanks to Lighting Magazine for the photo.

Elemental LED, A San Francisco Bay Area based LED lighting company, is expanding the REACH (Reduce Energy And Contribute to Humanity) program by partnering with the city of Richmond, CA. Elemental LED developed REACH to help promote energy conservation in the Bay Area community. To kickoff the new partnership, two weeks ago REACH conducted a lighting science and energy conservation workshop for the students of the RichmondBUILD green job-training academy.Established in April 2007, the RichmondBUILD Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Skills and Green Jobs Training Academy creates employment and career opportunities for Richmond residents and works to reduce violence in the Richmond community. The 14-week intensive program includes training in over 12 skill areas including basic electrical, basic welding, eco literacy and solar panel installation.
RichmondBUILD has received national and international recognition for its success in creating green jobs and putting unemployed California residents back to work. To date the program’s graduates have a 90% placement rate with an average wage of $18.33 and hour. Awards have included the 2007 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award and the Conservation Champion Award by Senator Barbara Boxer.
On November 29th, REACH co-hosted a lighting science and application workshop with Energy Conservation Options (ECO) a local green contractor at the RichmondBUILD training facility. Â Fifteen students attended the workshop and learned about energy efficient LED lighting technology, the developmental history of lighting, commonly used types of LED lighting for retrofits, practical knowledge of how to engage customers and tools to land a job with a green contractor.
Elemental LED Lighting Application Specialist Tara Bowerman and REACH Program Director Michael Gutman gave a presentation on the technical terms used for retrofit and new lighting projects. “Terms like Kelvin, CRI, lighting temperature, lumens and foot candles are all very important when trying to decide the right type of lighting for specific applications,†says Gutman.
Dahlia Moodie, President of ECO, began the workshop by presenting on the inefficient lighting technology of the past that is currently being replaced by energy efficient lighting. Moodie also provided the students with valuable information in a one-on-one format about running a contracting business.
REACH donated an LED lighting display to the RichmondBUILD program where students can play with different types of LED lights. Â The display resides in the RichmondBUILD training facility for the public to utilize.
REACH is collaborating with the City of Richmond on a donation of LED lights to the Richmond Public Library Main Branch, and more workshops with RichmondBUILD are currently underway.
“It was great to collaborate with RichmondBUILD on this workshop and we look forward to more collaborations in the future.  We wish all the students great success in moving into the green job force,†added Gutman.
